It depends on the group playing and the goal of the story being told but it is important to remember it is a game that you want as many people to enjoy as possible, including yourself.

If you guide your group too heavy-handedly then the players might feel trapped in a course only doing as you want but if you are too lax then you may not like what your campaign devolves into.

It depends on the party entirely. Many people are happy to see the story you're trying to tell and some are going out of their way to break it

There's all kinds. The better route for any of them is usually to try and course correct rather than off them. It's not uncommon for a player to die and then they expect to be able to make a new one

However, if you talk to them and give them warning and the other players are also upset by the disruption then you should ask them to leave the game.

Some players don't care about character death so they aren't deterred when it is thrown their way

It's just about learning and practice. Admitting when you make mistakes is a hard lesson to learn when you're role is to always be right.

I get a lot of positive feedback and most DMs do because they are taking on the lion's share of the work to play but that doesn't mean you did nothing wrong

I was a perma DM for years in several unrelated parties. You can always learn and improve.

I was a player a lot at the start and end of the time I've played but there was about 5ish years where I was rarely the player. Sometimes people would want to run a one-shot which gave me a break

It's not so bad. You get to recycle some materials if the other groups don't know eachother and you can see how other people deal with what you put before them

People do think differently than others and vice versa

Yeah, I like open-ended puzzles where the solution is just something that the players do that seems like it could be a proper way to solve it. People get really creative in a pinch

yeah, something like that. Sometimes you think "the way to kill him is for the player to stab him with his own weapon"

Sometimes you have an idea of what should happen but a player does something creative enough that it should be rewarded

There's been a few but my favorite involves a town that our party spent months of real time building a giant wall with defences knowing there would be an invading army in the future.

And that army never showed up?

One of the players that joined a few sessions before was a pirate with his very own ship.

Tore a massive hole in the wall and if it wasn't for his continuing to fire into the enemies after that we would have hunted down that character to the ends of the earth
